Located in the Southern part of scenic Aroostook County, Houlton Regional Hospital is a 77-bed acute care facility with 26 long-term care beds.  The services provided include acute patient care, comprehensive surgical services, outpatient therapies (i.e. physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and many others) patient and community education, pulmonary and cardiac rehab, radiology and a 24 hour emergency room.

Our physicians are trained to care for a wide range of conditions. The physicians and their staff are dedicated to providing you with the highest quality , personalized medical care.

Since it opened its doors in 1976, Houlton Regional Hospital has been a vital resource to the people in all the surrounding communities.  As health care has changed over the years, HRH has kept pace with programs and services designed to meet these changing needs.

Today Houlton Regional Hospital’s commitment to health goes far beyond its walls.  The Center for Community Health Education brings a whole new dimension of health care.  The center offers health education that encompasses the individuals, the family and our community by addressing health care educational needs.

Important 2025 changes

  • Labor & Delivery closure (effective May 2, 2025): HRH closed its obstetrics unit citing declining local births, staffing challenges, and patient-safety thresholds typical in rural OB. The emergency department will continue to manage emergency births. Official notice:

  • Management Services Agreement with NMMC (announced June 12, 2025): HRH entered a one-year management agreement with Northern Maine Medical Center (NMMC) to collaborate toward a potential affiliation. Both hospitals remain independent under their boards. Details:

  • Visitor Information: Check current hours, age limits, and unit-specific guidance — Visitor information.
  • Emergency Department entrance: North side of the building (92 Hartford St). For urgent concerns call (207) 532-2900.
  • Financial assistance: HRH Rural Health Clinics state that patients are seen regardless of ability to pay; discounts may be available based on family size and income. Ask at clinic locations.

Quality, awards & transparency

History & community role

The current campus opened in 1976 after the consolidation of Aroostook General and Madigan Memorial. HRH was designated a Critical Access Hospital in 2003 and remains one of the region’s largest employers. The hospital hosts programs in the Center for Community Health Education, including diabetes self-management, CPR, and blood drives.
